INACCURACY proved costly for GembrookCockatoo seniors, going down at home to Silvan by 21 points on Saturday.
The first quarter opened at a hectic pace with Paul Mackenzie’s tap finding Matt O’Neil to set the Brookers on their way with a quick goal to Brett Andrews.
With Craig Clarke in the goalsquare, providing a focal point for the home side, Travis Bartin and Paul Mackenzie assumed the ruck duties for the day. The Brookers had control of the quarter with Ian Litterback, Matt O’Neil, Shannon Richardson and Tristan Whytcross finding plenty of the ball and Gembrook’s backline holding steady with Paul Sankey, Joel O’Donohue and Mitch Hedger.
At quarter time Silvan led by two points as the Brookers failed to convert, managing two goals from seven scoring shots. The second quarter saw the Brookers continue to control the tempo of the game, but this did not show on the scoreboard.
The third quarter was a tough struggle with Silvan hitting back at the Brookers through Cox’s ability in the midfield, before the Brookers again regained the ascendancy, but were unable to put the score on the board allowing the opposition to go into the last change with a threepoint lead.
The last quarter saw Silvan take its chances up forward, while GembrookCockatoo missed five set shots, virtually handing Silvan the win.
Scores: GembrookCockatoo 7.3.55 lost to Silvan 11.10.76. Goals Gembrook: Craig Clarke 2, Ben Fenton, Ian Litterback, Steve Pantorno, Travis Bartin, Brett Andrews, 1. Best Gembrook: Joel O’Donohue, Travis Bartin, Paul Mackenzie, Paul Sankey, Tristan Whytcross.

In a battle for fourth spot, the Brookers were keen to avenge the previous loss to Silvan.
Although under strength due to two late callups, it was the Brookers best game for the season.
In the first quarter the Brookers jumped the unsuspecting Silvan with seven goals to one.
A determined Silvan came out firing in the second with some hard, tough football, but the Brookers stood up to the challenge.
The backline was under pressure with Scott Osseweyer dominating and supported by Harry Chernishoff and the Thomas boys. The onball department dominated with great work from Damian Smethurst, Clint Osseweyer and Nick Green.
The wingers in Mitch Evans and Dave Hope were active with Evans kicking four goals and Hope two in the first half. The third and fourth quarters saw the Brookers stay on top for a strong win and fourth place on the ladder. The Brookers play Healesville (third on percentage) this week, then Monbulk (second) and have a chance to grab third spot on the ladder.
Scores: GembrookCockatoo 22.8.140 d Silvan 11.12.78. Goals Brookers: Mitch Evans 7, Nathan Kruzicevic 6, Matt Timothy, Dave Hope 2, Nick Green, Steve Pantorno, Scott Medwell, Matt Failla, Steve Goodie, 1. Best Brookers: Mitch Evans, Scott Osseweyer, Nathan Kruzicevic, Damian Smethurst, Steve Paul.

A bye the previous week was a concern for the Brookers and they took time to settle down before Nathan Leversha kicked the first major. This was quickly followed by Dailan Ellis running down from his halfback position.
The two battled it out to the end of the quarter with the Brookers 3.4 to Silvan 1.1.
With unselfish play up the ground and the backline on top, the Brookers piled on six goals to one in the second quarter, with Todd Pye and Nathan Leversha bagging three each.
The third quarter was a tussle as Silvan tightened up and was more physical.
Positional changes at halftime and a newlook Silvan didn’t stop the Brookers from kicking goals, as Alex Scheudekopf and John Shipp posted their first. Andrew Hilder, playing up forward, was proving to be a good target, kicking two goals. Andrew Walker was a handful for the opposition, roving the packs well and snapping a goal. The downside was Alex Scheudekopf receiving slight concussion.
With the game virtually won, the coach made many positional changes to gauge the players versatility coming up to the finals.
Jarrod Scott went into the ruck and Grainger Hartridge ruckroved.
The fresh legs in the midfield ran Silvan into the ground, as Todd Pye, Aaron Cameron, Jarrod Sott, James Hampton, Nathan Leversha and Phil Muratore kicked eight goals between them without allowing Silvan to bother the scorers.
Scores: GembrookCockatoo 22.13.145 d Silvan 3.3.21. Goals Brookers: Nathan Leversha 6, Todd Pye 5, Phil Muratore, Andrew Hilder 2, Dailan Ellis, John Shipp, Andrew Walker, Alex Scheudekopf, Aaron Cameron, James Hampton, Jarrod Scott 1. Best Brookers: Todd Pye, Nathan Leversha, James Hampton, Ricky Causer.
