CRANBOURNE guide leader Robyn Garbutt is the 2006 Casey Citizen of the Year.
Casey Young Citizen of the Year is Eumemmerring college student Shannon Barnes, Senior Citizen of the Year is longtime Tooradin community worker Beryl Maddern, and NonResident of the Year is Berwick Secondary College teacher Lisa Benn of Drouin.
Ms Garbutt has served the Guiding movement for more than 20 years.
She assists Guiding Victoria to run camps that support environmental sustainability and is a mentor to new leaders and to Guides.
Robyn instigated the establishment of Campbell Trefoil Guild in Cranbourne, which undertakes practical works that contribute to charities.
She is also a member of the Adopt a Dolphin Program and is a supporter of the Red Cross, Cancer Council, Craig Road Nursing Home and Phillip Island Nature Reserve.
Robyn is a recipient of the 2001 Casey Community Volunteer Award, as well as the Guides Victoria Long Service Award, and the Banksia Award for Guide Achievement.
Shannon Barnes served as treasurer of the Eumemmerring College School Representative Council.
She is recognised as a peer support leader and mediator.
Shannon is also college representative and speaker at ceremonies for Eumemmerring College.
She is a member of the young leaders’ group and a graduate of the Victorian Youth Development Program, a buddy in the Big Brother, Big Sister program, and a member of the youth advisory panel for South East Local Learning and Employment Network.
Shannon is involved in many sports from crosscountry running to martial arts and is also a volunteer at the Anaconda Childcare Centre.
She was a recipient of the Baden Powell Award, the Rotary 2005 Rypen Award and the 2004 Eumemmerring Citizenship Award.
Beryl Maddern has for most of her life cared for others as a volunteer and as a member of local organisations.
She is a former leader of Tooradin Scouts, a longserving member of the Tooradin Preschool Committee and the Junior Tennis Club Committee, and served 27 years on the Tooradin Hall Committee of Management.
Beryl is an active member of her church and a volunteer for the Tooradin Anglican Church’s Bazaar.
For 50 years she has contributed to hampers for various causes and last year made 100 Christmas cakes.
After 30 years as a volunteer with the Country Women’s Association and five years with St John’s Opportunity Shop in Cranbourne, Beryl is now a mentor to new volunteers.
Lisa Benn worked as volunteer environment coordinator at Berwick Secondary College (BSC) and this resulted in the college becoming wastewise accredited within six months.
She was a nominee and finalist in the Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria competition and a 2005 finalist in the Proud Schools Award.
Lisa developed the BSC master plan and introduced recycling initiatives saving $10,000 a year.
She received a City of Casey Conservation and Initiative Grant and gained sponsorship and support from local businesses for environmental projects.
In her role as art teacher, Lisa encouraged and motivated students to successfully enter their artwork into various competitions, one receiving the Commonwealth Bank Green Ambassador Award.
She is a recipient of BSC 2004 Making a Difference Innovation Award.
The Cranbourne Car and Bike Show won the Community Event of the Year award.
This free family event is well established on the calendar.
The Cranbourne Car and Bike Show has attracted wide support from Australian clubs and brings together the community and traders with stalls, music and entertainment.
The 2005 event was its fifth successful year and attracted more than 15,000 people.
The organising committee is supported by the Cranbourne Regional Uniting Church and did a fantastic job attracting more then 500 cars and 200 bikes with their professional promotion and publicity receiving wide support and sponsorship.
