ST Francis Xavier College was recently honoured in the 2006 Youth category at the Lyrebird awards, which recognise junior theatre in the south east metropolitan area.
The school’s musical Seussical, based on the tales the Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham from Dr Seuss, was named Best Youth Production for 2006.
Students from the Berwick and Beaconsfield campuses took part in the production, which was staged last year at the Cardinia Cultural Centre. Sixtyeight performers from years seven to 12 danced and sang together with a 15piece student band, colourful set and costumes assisted by an enthusiastic back stage crew.
College VCE drama teacher Luke Mills was delighted to accept the award as Seussical’s director together with college music teacher Clare Caldwell as producer when the awards were presented earlier this month.
The college also won five other awards in a variety of categories, including Best Audio and Sound awarded to Lance O’Reilly, and College Music Teacher and Best Set awarded to Luke Mills.
The Best Ensemble was awarded to the bird girl singers – 2006 year 11 and 12 students Ashley Kalman, Kristen Williams, Amy Mazzitelli, Casey Hogan and Nicole McIntosh.
College textiles teacher Jade Nuttal won the Best Costume Award and Best Male Performer was presented to Josh McKendry Dow, who was a year 11 student last year.
