Concern over water road

Lang Lang resident Bruce Ridgway is concerned about the condition of Westernport Road outside Lang Lang townshipLang Lang resident Bruce Ridgway is concerned about the condition of Westernport Road outside Lang Lang township

By Elizabeth Lillis
INCREASED traffic on Westernport Road is an accident waiting to happen according to Lang Lang resident Bruce Ridgway.
Mr Ridgway is concerned an increase in truck traffic as water trucks collect water from the reopened Lang Lang bore and recent road works in Lang Lang will lead to a serious accident on the section of Westernport Road between Wattle Crescent and the entry to Pioneer Road.
Mr Ridgway said in parts, the road was only bitumen covered for approximately 230cm from the centre line.
“It is very rough on the edges and the trucks have to leave the road to pass each other,” he said.
Mr Ridgway, who lives on a property on Pioneer Road, said a sign, which had recently been put up to warn of trucks in the area, was obscured by a tree until only a short distance away.
“The speed limit on the road needs to be dropped down. It is currently 100km an hour and needs to be less to be safe.
“Trucks come over the hill and you can’t see them,” he said.
Westernport Road is managed by VicRoads.
VicRoads confirmed it had written to South East Water and Cardinia Shire Council and met on site with their officials.
Pioneer Road on which the bore is located is a local road under the management of the council.
VicRoads acting regional manager metro south east Michael Barker said VicRoads was aware of an expected increase in trucks accessing Pioneer Road from Westernport Road, however the increase was not viewed as significant.
Mr Barker said truck warning signs were installed by South East Water to inform motorist there may be trucks entering the road ahead.
He said VicRoads would investigate their visibility.
Mr Barker said there are no currently approved proposals to upgrade this section of Westernport Road.
He said VicRoads would continue to maintain the road under its routine maintenance program.
