UNLIKE most 17yearold girls, Beaconsfield teenager Emily Wood has dreams of becoming a carpenter.
Last month she received the VCAL Student Achievement Award for her dedication to the building and allied trades course she completed at Holmesglen Institute of TAFE in 2005.
Ms Wood said she was thrilled to receive her award, presented at Federation Square.
“I wasn’t really expecting the award and it was a great surprise,” she said.
Ms Wood was the only girl in the class and the top performing student in all 10 industry specific trade training areas offered as part of the VCAL program.
“It’s good working with the other guys in my class and they are pretty encouraging with what I do,” she said.
Ms Wood is now in the process of completing a preapprentice course in building.
“I haven’t got an apprenticeship lined up yet but I’m keen to become a carpenter and get into the building industry when I finish my course,” she said.
