“YUM, yum”, came to mind when visitors called at Beaconhills Village Campus in Berwick last week.
Students from prep to year four in the junior school were learning all about food and took part in foodrelated activities based on the theme ‘healthy food, healthy me’.
Head of the junior school Judy Barton said food was a focus in every activity for each of the key learning areas.
Ms Barton said students enjoyed shopping at the local supermarket, cooking and sharing culinary delights, visiting the Life Education van and constructing a food pyramid.
“Meeting Harold from the Life Education van was also a highlight for the students,” she said.
Grade two students at the college are also establishing a school vegetable patch.
A City of Casey grant to the college revegetation project helped buy garden tools, gloves, soil, seeds, timber, protective netting and the stakes.
The school’s aim is for students to be involved in caring for a vegetable garden and learning more about the foods they eat.
This is to solve the mystery of where food comes from and to encourage healthy food choices.
The garden has been established next to the hen house, from which eggs are collected from hens raised and grown by the students.
