INNER Wheel Berwick members and helpers spent ‘Coin For a Cord’ day on Friday running stalls to raise money for the Inner Wheel Australia (IWA) Cord Blood project.
Cord blood comes from the umbilical cord and is the blood left behind in the placenta.
This traditionally was discarded after a birth, but now can be donated for research.
The blood is rich in bloodforming stem cells and can be transplanted into a patient to bolster the blood system after it has been destroyed by chemotherapy and or radiation.
Children with blood illnesses, in particular acute leukaemia, have been the main focus for cord blood treatment.
