MORE than $23,000 in grants has been given out to land owners through the Cardinia Shire Council’s weed grant scheme.
A total of 55 community groups and private land owners will be able to tackle some of the shire’s worst weeds such as ragwort, blackberry, agapanthus, spear thistle and sweet pittosporum with the funds.
Preference was given to properties adjoining bush land, neighbours working together and land with a high conservation significance.
Cockatoo’s Veronica Wolstencroft is one of the grant recipients, and is keen to clear her 1.5-acre property of blackberries.
“After the weeds were sprayed across the road from our property we knew that something had to be done to stop our blackberries from spreading back on to the adjoining reserve,” she said.
For assistance with weeds contact Karla Rutherford on 5945 4351 or obtain a copy of the council’s weed brochure, which details all the weeds in the shire and eradication techniques.
The weed grant scheme is available every year and provides much-needed assistance to the community to help tackle and eradicate weeds.
