CASEY Council on Friday night launched a fundraiser to pay for a team from East Timor to compete in the Edwin Flack Games next year.
Casey mayor Neil Lucas said during a dinner in the civic centre that young people from Ermera in East Timor, which has a friendship agreement with Casey, could not afford to pay their own way to Australia.
He said the games and the visit was Sister Cities in action.
“The Casey Friends of Ermera was recognised during the Australian Sister Cities Association National conference held at Latrobe in September for its work in Ermera, particularly with education,” he said.
Casey has moved forward enormously during the last three years by bringing community groups into its people-to-people relationships with the result that both the friends group and the Edwin Flack — Connolly reciprocal games have been embraced by the community.
Oatlands Ward councillor Mick Morland said the council aimed to raise more than $30,000 to bring a team from Ermera.
Casey community can and will provide a wonderful experience for several young people from Ermera by doing this.
