
DROUIN Golf Club’s team won the annual Gerry Butler Memorial Plate for the second year in a row on Sunday.
Twenty teams from West Gippsland competed in the event at Drouin, named in honour of the late Gerry Butler a former life member of the club.
Joel Backman led the team with 42 points, Fred Gajdobranksi had 38 and Goran Danilov 36 for a winning total of 116. The fourth member of the team was Joe Matokovic (32 points).
Scratch winner on the day was Adam Villinger (Pakenham) with 71.
A-grade winner was Alan Axford (Traralgon) with 38 on a countback from P. Leishout (Garfield).
Joel Backman won B grade with 42 points and the runner-up was Ben Stubbs (Moe) with 38.
Nearest to pins – second: Troy Fox, fifth: Tom Carroll, 14th: Ben Stubbs, 17th: Neal Reginer.
Balls went down to 38 points and the CCR was 71.
SATURDAY RESULTS
This was a Stableford round at Drouin and 110 players enjoyed excellent weather and course conditions.
In A grade, Laurie Harris (12) came home strongly on the back nine to win a three-way countback with 40 points.
Runner-up was Lea Cadwell followed by Mick Lithgow. Jim Gregory and Phil Thomson both returned 39.
Ever reliable Charlie Hardy (16) also won on a countback in B grade with 38 points from Gordon Warren.
Tony Piner was next on 36 and Alan Fielden had 35.
Brian Kemp (22) recorded the highest score of the day with 41 to take out C grade. Runner up was Trevor Jones 39 on a count back from Eddie Stafford. Lester Smethurst had 38.
Nearest to pins – second: Mick Lithgow, fifth (pro-pin): Rod Hammond, 14th: Jim Gregory, 17th: Graham Austin.
Shane Dwyer had an eagle on the seventh.
Balls went down to 36 on a countback and the CCR was 71.
Eight ladies also ventured out on Saturday and Peg Hocking (18) was the star of the day with 42 points and also claimed the nearest to pin on the fifth.
WEDNESDAY RESULTS
A good field of 103 teed off for the Stableford competition and it was a welcome-back win for Cameron Snell (13) in A grade with 40 points.
Runner-up was Darryl Bryce on 37 from three others on the same score. They were Tom Carroll, Geoff Hewson and Mark Poulton.
Alan Wilson (20) had a nice round with 39 points to win B grade from Lindsay Robinson, Fred Delaney and Tom Flowers, all on 37.
Wayne Duckett (23) was on the right end of the countback result to win C grade with 39 points from Danny Dilger. Peter Walsh was next on 38 followed by Peter Johnson 37, Brian Kemp 37 and Noel Brereton 37.
Nearest to pins – second: Don Glen, fifth (pro pin): Glen Flowers, 14th: Mike Roberts, 17th: Greg Butler.
NINE-HOLE COMPETITIONS
Last Monday George Nicholson, with 22 points, was the winner from Glenda Warren 21, Alan Fagan 20 and Peter Anderson 19.
On Thursday for the seniors it was again Charlie Hardy with 23 points taking the prize.
Runner-up was Zed Weiclaw 22 followed by Brian Kemp 20, Joe Coggins 19 and Garth Quenault 19. Norma Scott with 20 points won the ladies from Teresa Kren and Betty Johnson both on 17.
COMING EVENTS
This Saturday is the Christmas mixed (11am to 12.30pm) with an overflow Par event.
A reminder that the club will host a New Years Eve function this year (See club noticeboard).
LADIES
Last Tuesday, the Drouin women had their Christmas break-up lunch after a nine-hole Ambrose event sponsored by Robert Green, Handley Funeral Services.
President Bernace welcomed Robert Green, Jill Greenland, Louise Sanders, Craig Stuchbury, Tom Carroll, members and visitors.
She then presented Craig Stuchbury from the Hillview Aged Care Centre at Bunyip with a cheque for $1600 being the proceeds from the recent charity day.
This cheque, along with the proceeds of the 2004 charity day will purchase a high-low bed for the centre.
The winners of holes one to nine were Bonnie Bransgrove, Margaret Mitchem, Fay Bastin and Von Kenny with 40 gross –24 nett.
Runners-up were Irene Jupp, Julie Robertson, Meg Blanchard and Di Sullivan with 38 gross –24 nett.
The winners of holes 10 to 18 were Karen Adams, Hilda Cadby, Margaret Cole and Elaine Howlett with 40 gross –25 1/8 nett.
Runners-up were Heather Fitzpatrick, Margaret Murray, Betty Johnson and Mary Clark with 43 gross –26 1/8 nett.
Margaret Purcell won the John Arnold Memorial Trophy sponsored by the family of the late John Arnold and presented by his niece Louise Sanders with 221 nett for three rounds.
Runner-up was Mary Clark with 224 nett.
Irene Morgan won the captain’s trophy and the runner-up was Poss Leeson.
Margaret Purcell won the Star Medal, sponsored by Jill Greenland.
Julie Robertson won the West Gippsland Women’s Golf Vic Silver Spoon.
The eclectic, sponsored by Mary Tymensen, was won by Shirley Todd in A grade and Mary Clark in B grade.
The 2005 putting, sponsored by Shirley Todd, was won by Jill Brenchley.
Margaret Purcell won the most consistent player, sponsored by Pam Pratt and Margaret Cole, and the runner-up was Glenda Warren.
Peggy Hocking sponsored the Handicap Reduction trophy and the winner was Nerida Hammond.
The Tuesday birdies and gobblers award was sponsored by Von Kenny and the winner was Lorna Hoskins with five birdies. Lorna also shared the gobbler award with Irene Morgan with two gobblers each.
The qualifier for Foundation for Young Australian Achievers was Margaret Mitchem. The day wound up with ‘Mrs Claus’ presenting all the non-winners with a Christmas gift.
The Warragul Fire Brigade ladies were thanked for lunch, as well as Bev behind the bar for her help and to all the others who helped to make the day such a happy occasion.
The Thursday nine-hole seniors competition was won by Norma Scott 20 points.
This week is the second round of the Downtowner Summer competition – starting time as usual.
