TEAGHAN Boothroyd, riding ‘Hey Hey’ won the Hotspur champion rider award for the 18th Annual City of Casey Riding of the Bounds on Sunday 23 April.
More than 140 people participated in the threehour ride on a picturesque 15kilometre trail from Akoonah Park Berwick around Beaconsfield and Berwick and back to the park.
Casey mayor Kevin Bradford commended the work of head marshal Jack Rae who helped organize the ride and led the contingent on his buckskin mare.
Cr Bradford aid Mr Rae was one of Casey’s most outstanding and enduring volunteers, having been involved in all 18 Riding of the Bounds.
“Mr Rae’s extensive knowledge of the area and of the equine industry is of great assistance to the City of Casey in conducting this event for horse riders who come from many parts of Victoria.”
Cr Bradford said Riding of the Bounds was one of Casey’s annual highlights that involved riders of all disciplines.
He said it was a historic event that involved riders on horseback or in horsedrawn vehicles travelling together to inspect and secure the City of Casey boundaries.
The spectacle celebrates a tradition that has been held in the City of Casey’s Sister City BerwickuponTweed, Northumberland, England for 550 years.”
The Rotary Club of Narre Warren and City of Casey provided a free barbecue for riders on their return to Akoonah Park.
