ST MICHAEL’S Parish representative Elizabeth Overdyk believes the great Australian nation can reach its full potential only when it becomes healthy in spirit.
Ms Overdyk said this during an address to welcome an Aboriginal message stick to Casey Hospital, Berwick, where it was placed on an official stand.
She said that in the same way that mind and body needed to be healthy to reach its full potential, the same applied to our nation.
“We need only see the early signs of springtime in the blossom of wattles to see that the earth mostly enjoys good health, blessed by nature herself, but the healing of her spirit is prescribed.
“Such healing can come about through reconciliation but, more importantly, by a healing that comes from more than words.
“It needs a deeper understanding and mutual respect.
“When we acknowledge the richness and deep spirituality the indigenous culture shares with the land and is willing to offer and teach us, together we can grow as a healthy nation. The prognosis will be positive.
“The Berwick community received this message stick from the neighbouring tribe in Pakenham.
“Since then it has been passed on to primary and secondary schools so that by hearing the indigenous story and by education, understanding is nurtured.”
Casey Hospital executive director Peter Falkiner in turn handed the message stick back to parish representatives for their symbolic care.
Mr Falkiner blessed the messengers: “Creator Spirit, we ask that you bless this messenger, and the message stick. We are grateful that the message stick has come to Casey Hospital.
“This community sends a message of peace, goodwill and friendship. May the journey to Alice Springs continue in trust and hope.”
