PROMISES, promises – they’re what makes an election campaign go round.
With the PakenhamBerwick district sitting astride a political knife edge, residents saw and heard plenty from election candidates over the past few weeks.
Following the State Government’s reelection, there are several key promises that Pakenham residents can make sure will be kept during the next four years.
These include a new primary school at Lakeside at Pakenham and the purchase of land for a new primary school at Officer.
There will also be a contribution of $480,000 towards extensions at Pakenham library.
A grant of $333,000 was promised as a contribution towards renovation of Pakenham outdoor pool.
Zone three fares will be abolished on the metropolitan transport system.
Cuts will also be made to stamp duty from six per cent to five per cent for houses valued at between $115,000 and $400,000.
Local MPs will be under pressure from voters to ensure they maintain a strong local voice in State Parliament.
Promises were also made to improve facilities and services around the district.
Some of the other major announcements made by the State Government during the election campaign included:
AN offleash dog park will be established at the Lords picnic area at Cardinia Reservoir Park;
A NEW Select Entry Accelerated Learning course for academically talented students in the region at Emerald Secondary College;
AN $800,000 upgrade of Garfield railway station with new car parks and other facilities;
A GRANT of $10 million for a 100hectare expansion of the Cardinia Creek parklands.
IMPROVED bus services on BelgraveGembrook line.
A GRANT of $5200 for Cardinia’s St John Ambulance brigade.
FUNDING for stage two of Upper Beaconsfield Primary School refurbishment.
GRANTS to Upper Beaconsfield Community Centre ($8000) and the Berwick Neighbourhood Centre ($2000).
FUNDING of $200,000 for the expansion of the Gemco Community Performing Arts Centre in Emerald.
REDUCTIONS in the cost of all V/Line train and bus tickets by an average of 20 per cent.
