PAKENHAM seniors produced a strong team effort at home to ‘scrounge’ a 17point win against reigning premiers Doveton on Saturday.
With both sides missing key players, this was a danger game for Pakenham.
Doveton came out of the blocks early to take control in the first quarter and headed in to the main break with a lead of nine points.
In the second quarter the Lions steadied and had 13 scoring shots to five, but with some poor attempts at goal, led by only 14 points at the main break.
Momentum swung again in the third and Doveton took the lead back by the smallest of margins at the last break and set the scene for a fiery and tense last quarter.
However, the fitness of Pakenham shone through, but poor kicking again (two goals eight behinds) could have seen the victory margin a lot more than what it was.
Overall this was an excellent team effort with every player contributing.
Joe Allen, in arguably his best game for the season, controlled his position either up forward or down back. Justin Sutherland again showed his value to the side as he gave his onballers first use all day from the ruck.
Stuart Burridge, Glenn Pearson and veteran Travis Murphy in defence repelled many of the opposition’s forward passages of play.
Scores: Pakenham 12.27.99 d Doveton 12.10.82.

Returning from injury Matt Ahern showed plenty of guts in his game on the competition’s leading fullforward and Dima Dimakopoulos also showed the senior selectors his worth with a great running game.
Scores: Pakenham 10.3.63 lost to Doveton 13.6.84.

A lack of numbers and a superior opposition resulted in the Lions going down by 113 points.
Jon Higgins continued his recent good form with another bestonground performance.
Brad Collett returned to the side and played well. Chris McKinlay showed his improvement, while Jarrod Jeffreys, Clint Thomas and James Daly all played credible games.
