IN fine, mild conditions Casey Scorpions fell short by eight points against the Werribee Tigers in round eight at Reid Oval, Warrnambool on Saturday.
The Scorpions were looking towards a spot in the top four after defeating Williamstown the previous week.
However it was Werribee that blasted the first three goals before the Scorpions had scored.
A mark and goal to Steve Harrison opened the Scorpions’ account, but it was the Werribee midfield that took advantage of the stoppages early and the Tigers skipped to a 14point lead at the first change.
The Scorpions needed a spark and winning the stoppages, as well as building an intense attack and pressure on the football was their aim in the second quarter.
They stuck to the plan well and brought themselves back into the match with the first three goals of the second quarter to take the lead that changed several times.
Free kicks to Werribee in front of goal hurt the Scorpions and at half time they led by a point.
In the second half constant pressure and goals to Werribee gave it a 16point lead at the final change.
The last quarter was a dour struggle and the Scorpions grabbed the lead with a goal from Aaron Fiora from outside the 50metre arc, setting the scene for a close finish.
In the end it was ineffective disposal that proved costly for the Scorpions as the Werribee Tigers held their nerve to record a victory.
Despite the disappointing defeat, Scorpions captain Steve Harrison led from the front with 23 possessions
He was supported by David Biagi and Kyle Matthews with 20 possessions. Next best were Ben Heenan, Jamie Cann and Marcel Bruin.
