A DETERMINED 42run stand between Peter O’Brien and Luke Wishart helped Devon Meadows to overcome early trouble and set a competitive 258 against Merinda Park at the Cranbourne racecourse on Saturday.
After being sent in against the Cobras, Panthers Bill Loudon and Daniel Steet battled hard on a pitch offering much to the bowlers.
However their determined stand ended when Loudon was dismissed after 45 minutes for 11.
Steet (26) followed soon after and his dismissal triggered a middleorder collapse, the home side losing 4/25 in six overs.
David Simpson and Peter Zauner steadied the innings and their partnership ended when Zauner was caught for 23. Darren Morrow then joined Simpson and guided the Panthers to 6/131 at tea.
With the pitch flattening out as the innings wore on, the Panther pair began to flourish. However their 71run seventhwicket stand ended when Simpson was caught behind for 47.
Morrow (49) soon followed and when Darren Logan was run out, the Panthers were again reeling at 9/212.
However Peter O’Brien’s welcome return to form and Luke Wishart’s excellent support allowed the Panthers to survive until the 79th over.
O’Brien’s innings ended on 46, leaving Wishart 17 not out and the Panthers with a competitive total to defend going into the Christmas break.

Devon Meadows failed to capitalise on a solid start and will need to chase down Catani’s 9/275 at Glover Reserve this week.
Early wickets to Luke Marrow (1/34) and Mick Floyd (2/53) stifled the Blues top order, reducing them to 3/37.
The visitors then regrouped, adding 80 for the fourth wicket, before Lincoln Hepburn (1/40) made the vital breakthrough.
Mick Aughtie (2/35) claimed two more wicket soon after to swing the game back in Devon Meadows’ favour, Catani 6/143 after 52 overs.
However the home side then appeared to go off the boil dropped catches and sloppy fielding costing valuable runs.
Mark Fairbrother (3/49) claimed the last three wickets to fall, and the home side will have to bat well in order to secure its second win of the year.

Devon Meadows is in a similar situation, after Cardinia racked up 6/298 at Junction Village.
After sending the Bulls into bat, the home side failed to make an early breakthrough, Cardinia’s massive 159run opening stand finally broken by Daniel Marascia (1/54) in the 46th over.
Brett Vance (3/71) and Justin Mentiplay (2/66) were the other wicket takers.

Devon Meadows won a thriller at PUT by two runs with just two balls to spare.
Brandon Mackie (1/7), Daniel Marascia (1/8) and Chris Morrell (1/9) bowled well to help restrict the home side to 3/81 off its 25 overs.
Chris Morrell (15 retired) and Andrew Saxon (8) got the run chase off to a solid start, but tight bowling saw wickets fall and the required run rate creep up to bring the Yabbies back into the contest.
A superb 18 retired from Jaryd Harley helped the Panthers get back on track, leaving Brandon Mackie (8 not out) and Hayden Enlund (5) to secure the win for the Panthers with two balls and six wicket in hand.

Devon Meadows’ Kookaburra Cup campaign suffered a blow when it went down to Merinda Park by 60 runs.
Bill Loudon (2/28) and Travis Canavan (1/19) were the only wicket takers as the C. Onras plundered 179 from their 20 overs.
In reply, Devon Meadows was never in the hunt, Loudon (25 from 20) and Mick Aughtie (21 from 19) the only batsmen to threaten as the Panthers were bundled out for 119 in the 18th over.
