FORMER Berwick RSL president Brian Hetherton has been elected as one of the Edrington Ward councillors alongside former mayor Mick Morland.
Cr Hetherton has been ready to put his front foot forward for the community, especially in recent times when he served the RSL as president for a four-year term.
He and his wife Pauline are still committed to the branch.
Cr Hetherton has had an interest in the council, but now finds himself in the thick of things.
Traditionally, new councillors are quickly faced after election with intense lobbying on who will be their first mayor.
Cr Heatherton did not escape this as his phone ran hot over the weekend and all day Monday.
He holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Melbourne University, is a qualified accountant and was an officer in the national service.
Cr Hetherton has worked as an accountant overseas and for a large company as an operations manager for superannuation.
He was busy on Monday researching the bona fides of candidates for the mayoralty and gaining an insight into how the council system worked.
Cr Hetherton said during the declaration of the polls on Sunday that he aimed to serve as a councillor to the best of his ability.
“I thank people for their support, and especially my family,” he said.
