A MULTIMILLION dollar boost to Lang Lang’s power supply began last week.
Electricity transmission and distribution company SP AusNet last week turned the first sod on $16 million works to strengthen the area’s supply and cater for future growth.
Residents of Lang Lang and other small towns were frustrated earlier this year by electricity supply problems that caused dozens of blackouts over a period of several weeks.
SP AusNet said at the time it would embark on a major project to fix power problems in the area.
Director of strategic special projects Peter Buck said the works would both resolve load issues and augment the network for future growth.
The works include the building of a new substation as well as putting in new large power lines.
“These are very significant works and will provide longterm support to the network as electricity demand in the area increases,” Mr Buck said.
“These works are part of SPAusNet’s 30year plan for the area, ensuring stability and strength of the network.
“The works will take 12 months to complete, however there will be sequential improvements to the area’s supply as the works progress.
“We are committed to ensuring quality of supply for residents of Lang Lang and surrounds and are very pleased to be able to deliver such a good outcome as well as make provisions for longterm growth in the area.”
Cardinia councillor Doug Hamilton, who was among the guests at last week’s ceremony, was delighted that the electricity works were about to begin.
“It is estimated that the township of Lang Lang has a current population of 1300 people. This is expected to grow to 2500 people by 2020,” he said.
The upgrade will complement the work undertaken by energy company Alinta to provide natural gas to the township.
