THREE car crashes marked a hectic day for the Pakenham Road Rescue Unit last Friday.
PRRU members from the Pakenham SES and Nar Nar Goon CFA were called to singlevehicle incidents at Officer and Catani and a dramatic twocar smash at Narre Warren in which three people were trapped in a car and six people injured.
Pakenham SES spokesman Stephen Monro said it had been a busy day.
“The first call was to Armytage Road in Officer at 7.40am to a rolled Mitsubishi Lancer in the middle of the road,” he said.
“The second call for the day occurred on a bend on the KooweerupLongwarry Road, near Humpries Road in Catani, at 4.30pm.
“An elderly lady came off the road. Her car had rolled several times into a paddock before coming to rest on its roof.”
Rescuers removed the driver’s door before the woman was stretchered from the car and into the care of paramedics at the scene.
The final call of the day was at the corner of the Monash Freeway and Princes Highway between Berwick and Narre Warren on the top of the freeway overpass.
The twocar crash happened about 11.10 pm.
“Rescuers were faced with a rare scenario of three men trapped in one of the cars,” Mr Monro said.
PRRU volunteers removed the rear driver’s side door to release one of the injured men, who was airlifted to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition with serious head injuries.
The driver had multiple leg fractures and was in a serious but stable condition.
“The rescue had an added degree of difficulty, as the car was resting on a traffic light that had been knocked over on to the bridge.
“The car was on an awkward angle,” Mr Monro said.
Rescuers remained at the scene until 2.30am.
Two mobile intensive care ambulances, four standard ambulances and a helicopter attended the crash site, along with PRRU members, police, CFA and Narre Warren SES.
