IT may be impossible to put a price on life, but spending as little as $40 could save one.
At least, that’s the faith the folk at St John Ambulance hold in their new CPR123 personal learning program.
The lifesaving kit, launched last week, was designed to teach families the basics of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), without them taking a firstaid course.
The CPR123 package contains an instructional DVD, a life support book and a manikin to practise on.
Cardinia St John Ambulance volunteers were delighted with the new device, and believed it would help the inexperienced learn a vital skill.
Superintendent Hilary Mueller believed the kit was a great initiative and that every household should have one.
“If it’s going to save a life, it’s money well spent,” she said.
Peter Cocks, St John Ambulance corporate affairs manager, said: “CPR is a vital skill that can mean the difference between life and death, yet it is so simple to do.”
He said St John Ambulance aimed to have at least one person in every Cardinia household trained in firstaid, and believed the CPR123 kit would help reach that goal.
“Knowing CPR will help keep a person alive until paramedics arrive to provide an advanced level of resuscitation,” Mr Cocks said.
The CPR123 kit costs $40 and can be bought through the St John Ambulance website at www.stjohnvic.com.au or by calling 1300 360 455.
The Cardinia St John Ambulance division meets every Wednesday at the Outlook Community Centre, in Pakenham.
The meetings, which run from 7pm until 9pm, are free to the public and there’s an open invitation to anyone wanting to learn firstaid.
