THE streets of Kooweerup are set for a facelift after Cardinia Council announced $180,000 would be spent on improving various sections of the township.
New footpaths, street furniture and a pedestrian crossing are to beautify the town and also improve the safety of the area for residents.
Work will commence next week to complete the footpaths on Station Street and Rossiter Road, with the entire project scheduled to be finished by the end of the year.
Kooweerup Township Committee secretary Geoff Pledge said the group had been keen to get the money allocated and was delighted the works in the area would finally be completed.
“It was probably about seven to eight years ago when all the work started and it’s great that more money has been made available to finish the job,” Mr Pledge said.
“It will improve the safety of the area and make it much easier for the elderly, as well as the children who use the footpaths when going to school. As well as the safety aspect, it will also make the surrounding area much more pleasing to look at,” he said.
Cr Doug Hamilton said he was pleased about the funding and was keen to see the pedestrian crossing installed to make it safer for the schoolchildren in the area.
“It is currently unsafe for the kids from both the primary school and the Catholic school when they cross the road, so the new pedestrian crossing will ensure the safety of all who use it,” Cr Hamilton said.
The State Government will contribute $90,000 to the works with the other $90,000 being funded by Cardinia Council.
The Government grant is part of the Living Regions, Living Suburbs Program, designed to support activities that promote economic and social renewal in rural, regional and suburban communities throughout Victoria.
