BEACONHILLS year nine students get their hands dirty as they learn to grow their own vegetables.
As part the of their horticulture module, each class set up a ‘vegie’ patch which they tended with the hope of using the fully grown vegetables in the salads at their end-of-year barbecue.
The module, which is part of the year nine curriculum, offers a range of diverse and engaging learning opportunities.
It includes the study of plant biology, farming methods, sustainable practices, the role of Landcare and an historical and cultural understanding of farming. An excursion to the Centre for Environmental and Research in Environmental Strategies (CERES) energy park in East Brunswick to look at alternative methods of farming and soil and stream conservation also formed part of the module.
