Steven ‘Cupcakes’ Harrison has a weird tale to tell about the origins of his nickname.By Callan Date
IT may be a sweet nickname, but Steve Harrison isn’t overly happy about the Cupcakes tag that has stuck since early this year.
The Pakenham Golf Club member tells an interesting and somewhat sugarcoated tale of how his latest nickname originated through his work as an electrical apprentice.
“The site foreman who comes down from Queensland puts little messages that say ‘cupcakes’ where we need to install different things on job sites,” Steven said.
The Narre Warren resident can’t recall why he was the one dubbed with the Cupcakes nickname, but says it has taken off since he was first labelled with it.
“All the guys at work call me Cupcakes and everyone at Pakenham Golf Club has gone with it as well.”
Steven is somewhat thankful the nickname hasn’t spread to some of his other social groups, but believes it may only be a matter of time.
“My dad is the only one who calls me Cupcakes in my family because we play golf together down at Pakenham.”
The 20yearold has impressed many people down at the local course and had members in awe after winning his first club competition after only three months in the game.
“I took up golf at the start of this year because my dad has been playing for 20 years and I thought I would give it a shot.”
He is now taking to the fairways like they are a cakewalk and producing plenty of great scores.
But his ability is not just confined to the white balls and Steven serves down a mean tennis ball as well.
“I play pennant at Mooroolbark Tennis Club and do a fair bit of water skiing up at Eildon too.”
Most construction sites are bound with whacky nicknames but Cupcakes would almost have to take the cake as one of the weirdest.
