Wickers fiddle away lead

Berwick coach Ronnie Burns lays down the law to his charges during a break on Saturday.Berwick coach Ronnie Burns lays down the law to his charges during a break on Saturday.

AGAINST Tooradin, Berwick got a slow start, Tooradin kicking the first two goals before the Wickers shook off their lethargy and kicked five goals to grab a 22point quartertime lead. But Tooradin had far greater control of the ball more kicks for goal. In the first quarter Tooradin had 10 shots at goal to six.
One of the main factors for this was the Wickers chipping the ball around while Tooradin looked for longer options and appeared to have greater confidence in their teammates. Beriwck finessed far too much and turned the ball over with annoying regularity.
John McNamara and Dan O’Hara were strong in defence and had good support from Andrew Tuck and David Thurmond, whose tenacity and ball sense make him a valuable asset.
The forward line was well served by Gorizidis and Donaldson, who finished with five goals between them. They could kick more if the forward line was open and the ball was kicked to their respective strengths.
The game got away from Berwick and Tooradin went on to a good home win.
Scores: Tooradin 13.18.96 d Berwick 15.4.94.
Goals: G. Gorizidis 3, R. Donaldson, A. Mott, R. Nisbet 2, J. Kickett, R. Burns, D. Thurmond, G. McLean, A. Tuck, C. Mizzi 1.
Best: A. Tuck, J. McNamara, C. Kickett, A. Betts, D. Thurmond.

RESERVES

Berwick had a good win after dominating from start to finish and running out comfortable winners by 15 goals in a display of systematic team football. The Wickers were switched on from the first bounce and there were fine games from Michael Hanigan, Matt Ravenhall, Sam Bennett, Brad Molineux and speedster Matthew Fowler, who finished with six goals from lightning leads and superb delivery. Jason Dodd was unbeatable in the ruck after the main break and the Wickers piled on 17 goals to nil for the second half.
Scores: Berwick 22.12.144 d Tooradin 5.5.35.
Goals: M. Fowler 6, S. Bennett 4, C. Donaldson, S. Dyson, J. Dodd 3, M. Ravenhall, G. Keet, B. Molineux 1.

UNDER 18

Berwick won a onesided match against the new team to the competition. Tooradin did not have the skill to match this tightly knit group of boys from Berwick as the young Wickers pumped the ball forward for Steven Sheen to finish off their good work with nine goals. As with the reserves, this was a great team effort with every player doing his bit for his team.
Scores: Berwick 27.9.171 d Tooradin 1.3.9.
Goals: S. Sheen 9, K. Fowler 4, M. Turner, S. Makrgiannis, D. McCormick 2, B. Reid, C. Vigona, J. Barrow, D. Caldwell, T. Andrews 1.
Best: S. Barnes, K. Fowler, D. McCormick, S. Sheen, P. Vanschilt.
