A better path to childcare

THE collapse of a major child minding centre franchise last year makes me wonder about child minding centres at workplaces.
I was never happy about the sweeping takeover of small child minding centres over the last few years, although I was told the franchise was providing a good service to parents.
The new system spelt the demise of many community type centres such as the Uniting Church centre at Berwick and I saw that as a great pity.
But I have seen staff, especially as is mostly the case, female staff deeply concerned when a child has been ill and they have a commitment to work.
I have often thought that many business houses could find room for a small place where children could be monitored and most employees would be happy to contribute toward the cost of a child carer.
Parents would feel much more comfortable if their children were close by.
Perhaps with the turmoil now in the child minding industry government regulations could be re-drawn to make such a service easier to provide.
