CARDINIA’S local laws team is urging residents to take extra care of their furry friends in the wake of last week’s heat wave.
They are advising locals to provide plenty of fresh water for their pets and to avoid car trips during extreme heat conditions.
Brooke Ranken, senior local laws officer, says plenty of accessible fresh water should be available for pets during hot weather.
“Animals and birds dehydrate quickly in heat conditions with potentially lethal effects on their general health, in particular kidneys and heart,” she said.
“Pets are similar to people, especially when they are old and frail or very young and they need watching on extremely hot days and extra care.
“Wherever possible keep pets in a cool place with plenty of fresh water close by during hot weather.”
Ms Ranken also warned that pets should never be left in cars, particularly on hot days.
“Dogs do not sweat so they are particularly vulnerable as temperatures inside cars quickly climb to dangerous levels,” she said.
“People who take dogs with them to work, especially in the back of utes and trucks should reconsider on hot days. The trays can become searingly hot in the sun.
“Heat stroke can be a life-threatening condition in animals.”
Residents living in fire danger areas are also reminded to make provisions for their pets in the event of a fire or emergency.
