‘Get cracking’ call on bypass

RATEPAYERS have four weeks to pull out the whip and get the State Government cracking on the long-awaited Kooweerup Bypass.
Cardinia Shire councillor Stuart Halligan wants as many people as possible to sign a petition to get Spring Street moving on the project.
Cr Halligan is hoping a broad spectrum of the community – from residents to traders – will sign the document, which he has circulated around schools and businesses in Kooweerup.
“It is going to be important – we have to show the Government that we are determined about the cause and concerned about the safety of the people in Kooweerup,” he said.
Cr Halligan said it was imperative that the project was delivered sooner than later.
“This week kids are back at school so there’s that safety concern again,” he said.
“There’s a terrible lot of feeling out here about the safety issues – that’ s what people are talking about.”
Landholders are also hamstrung as the wait for a decision to be made on the project – farmers’ cropping plans and the sale of property has been halted, as reported in last week’s Gazette.
VicRoads has come up two possible routes for the bypass, but State Government funding is yet to be committed for the project.
Cr Halligan said the petition would be presented to Parliament before the State Government finalised its budget for the new financial year.
