Heat hits possums

DOZENS of ring tail possums were among the casualties of last week’s heatwave.
Maryknoll Wildlife Shelter took in 26 of the species – including many that were pregnant – from Wednesday to Friday.
The shelter’s owner Reg Mattingley said ring tail possums were literally dropping out of trees.
“Some died as they arrived, some died within hours,” he said.
“They nest in trees so they’re very exposed to the elements.”
The shelter took in 26 ring tail possums last week but only one adult survived. And two babies, whose mothers died from the extreme heat, are now in the care of Mr Mattingley’s friend, Wendy Power.
Mr Mattingley’s wife Jenny urged residents to look out for wildlife during extreme heat.
“It doesn’t hurt to put out some water under the base of the tree, away from cats of course,” Mrs Mattingley said.
“If you’re able to approach wildlife, use a cloth and pick it up because it means it needs help.”
Anyone who comes across injured wildlife is urged to contact a local vet or Maryknoll Wildlife Shelter direct on 5942 8518.
Residents can also call the RACV on 13 11 11 to find out the location of their nearest wildlife shelter.
