Sheep shearing at Show

THE sheep exhibition will be a major feature at this year’s Berwick Show.
Dorothy Vallence, superintendent of the Sheep Exhibit, is once again expecting high quality with exhibitors coming from many parts of Victoria.
“Exhibitors express a keenness to come to Berwick as they believe it to be one of the best organised and conducted sheep shows outside the Royal Melbourne Show,” Dorothy said.
A feature at this year’s Show will be sheep shearing, including a display on the Sunday of blade shearing by 87-year-old former shearer George Winterton from Hoppers Crossing.
Saturday will see the judging of the Stud Sheep and Fleeces in the Short Wool and Long Wool Sections. The Black and Coloured Sheep and Fleeces will be judged on Sunday.
The Stud Sheep judges this year are Mr John Stivens, Poll Dorset breeder from Barnawatha, who will judge the Shortwool Section and Mr Peter Baker, Corriedale breeder from Baringhupand, who will judge the Long Wool Section. Mr Vin Tyquin of Clayton who will judge the Fleece Section.
As in previous years, there will be people demonstrating the ancient crafts of wool spinning, weaving and felt-making. Members from Waverley Spinners and Weavers, and McClelland Spinners and Weavers will conduct the demonstrations. People will have the opportunity to try-out the crafts as well as ask questions over the two days of the Show.
