Pet expo a howling

By Melissa Grant
MORE than 1000 people with their pets in tow flocked to Cardinia’s annual pet expo.
Dogs and cats were just some of the furry creatures brought along to the Cardinia Shire Council offices on Saturday.
Children also had the chance to interact with farmyard animals including goats, geese and guinea pigs.
The council is investigating moving the event to a bigger venue next year after the strong turnout.
Pet competitions and discounted microchipping were among the attractions.
About 100 pets were microchipped on the day and 50 were registered.
The council’s senior local laws officer, Brooke Ranken, said the Pet Expo was a fun day and a great opportunity for local residents to learn more about responsible pet ownership.
A pet parade and competition was held for the first time.
“The pet parade and pet competition generated al lot of interest,” Ms Ranken said.
The best trick award went to a curly-haired Jack Russell named Chloe owned by Christine. Popcorn, a beloved labrador of Jennifer, won best-dressed category and Rebecca and her dog Lucy took out the look-alike competition.
Each winner received a trophy and a new lead.Ms Ranken thanked stallholders for coming along and local Venturers from Kooweerup and Cannibal Creek who ran the sausage sizzle.
She said council staff were looking forward to next year’s expo.
“It is hoped the event will be even bigger and better next year with investigations underway to move the Pet expo to a bigger venue,” Ms Ranken said.
