THE Probus Club of Pakenham enjoyed a pleasant visit to the sand sculptures at Frankston on 20 February, stopping first at Ballam Park for morning tea.
At present the theme at the sand sculptures is “Dinostory” – an exhibition of sand sculptures depicting creatures and scenes from the past.
International sculptors work all year round and their work is also done in snow and ice.
Bulldozers are brought in and it takes two days for the sculptures to be demolished. The sand is taken away and reused for next year’s events.
It is compacted firmly into wooden forms to create the general shape and size of the sculpture.
Bricky sand (also called heavy sand) is used to build the sculptures because beach sand is smoother and rounder so doesn’t stay together quite as well.
The sculptures are strong, but they do need some maintenance.
The sculptors are predominantly male.
The club held its annual general meeting on 6 March.
President Keith McGrath presented the l9th annual report of club events for the past year.
Keith thanked everyone for their participation in all activities held and thanked all of his committee for their contribution to the club.
Special thanks went to the secretary, Ruth Buckley, for her support throughout the year.
Concluding his report, Keith wished Joan Vogels, the incoming president, and her committee all the best for the coming year.
Ten-year pins were awarded to Lois Mashado, Peggy and Tom Proctor, Adrienne and John Cathcart, Keith English and Win Wilkins.
The club’s next meeting will be held on 3 April at the Pakenham Bowls Club at l0am.
