YMCA Cardinia Life and the Cardinia Shire Council are joining forces in a bid to get residents moving for the Premier’s Active Families Challenge.
The challenge encourages families from across the community to participate in 30 minutes of physical activity a day for 30 days, between 8 March and 19 April, to help increase their physical activity levels and get involved in sport and recreation activities.
To help local families meet the challenge, all registered participants will receive a free 15-visit family pass to attend YMCA centres across Victoria, including Cardinia Life.
YMCA Cardinia Life centre manager Wade Mackrell said it was a great initiative.
“One of the biggest barriers to a healthy lifestyle is the ability to be active as a family,” he said.
“The challenge is a great time for parents to get motivated by their children to take it on and be active for 30 minutes,” he said.
The Premier’s Active Families Challenge is part of the Victorian Government’s Go For Your Life initiative that aims to improve the physical activity, health and wellbeing of families.
Premier John Brumby said the State Government was urging Victorians from all age groups to sign up and take part in this year’s challenge.
“The Victorian Government believes good nutrition and regular exercise can play a key role in turning the tide against the looming diabetes and obesity epidemics,” he said.
The Premier’s Active Families Challenge is free and open to all Victorians and as well as the 15-visit YMCA pass, all registered families will receive a 15 per cent discount at Rebel Sport stores, as well as the chance to win prizes ranging from sports packs for their local schools and gym memberships to sport gift vouchers.
