The Grimstones’ magic

SKYWORKS’ marionette show, The Grimstones will create its own special magic at the Arts Centre, Warragul on Wednesday, 25 March at 7.30pm.
The Grimstones is a Gothic fairytale, compelling and magical, about a girl who reads dreams, a baby boy with three legs, a mother who sews garments lined with warmth and joy and a grandfather who heals people with his magical concoctions.
The story is told with beautiful handcrafted old-world marionettes, giant books and sign language, making it a truly delightful experience for both hearing and deaf audiences. Those who enjoy Harry Potter, Edward Scissorhands or The Addams Family will love The Grimstones.
The Grimstones was created by Asphyxia, a deaf circus performer and trapeze artist turned puppeteer who has toured nationally and internationally over the past decade.
Asphyxia developed the aesthetics for the show and designed and handcrafted each of the marionettes and the exquisite sets that surround them.
Described as magical, beautiful and unique, the entire set emerges from three giant books that open up to reveal The Grimstones’ intricate world, contrasting between the delightful warmth of Velvetta’s sewing studio, Mortimer’s cold tomb strewn with roses and Elcho’s timeless apothecary. Asphyxia said there were always a handful of people who lingered after the show, asking questions, examining the sets and puppets and longing to somehow take a piece of it home with them.
“So I have created an Artists Journal that follows my journey from the initial inspiration through to opening night,” she said.
