A MAN was flown to The Alfred hospital after a car crash in Berwick last Sunday.
Police said a dark blue Mercedes hit a gum tree in Coniston Avenue at 4.30am, throwing the 21-year-old driver from the vehicle.
Casey Traffic Management Unit (TMU) Sergeant Pat McGavigan said the driver lost control of the vehicle after travelling around the right-hand bend and hit the tree on the opposite side of the road.
The driver, from Berwick, was taken to The Alfred with potentially life-threatening injuries.
A passenger, a 36-year-old man also from Berwick, was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
Both men were in a critical condition.
Police, the CFA and the major collision investigation unit attended the scene.
Sgt McGavigan said police believed speed was a contributing factor.
“The faster you go, the harder you hit and the more likely you are of receiving a serious injury,” he said.
