Babes pass cancer baton

MEMBERS of the Lioness Club of Berwick changed identities last weekend and became the Berwick Bush Babes – a relay team to raise awareness and funds for cancer research.
The Bush Babes took part in the Cancer Council’s Casey-Cardinia Relay for Life for the Cancer Council.
The relay was planned over a 24-hour period from 6pm Friday, 13 March until 6pm Saturday, 14 March at Akoonah Park, Berwick, but was cut short by rain.
The first lap was walked by survivors and carers before members of the various teams joined in and the challenge began – to keep at least one walker from each team on the track for the next 24 hours.
The Berwick Bush Babes was one of the teams that did it with the support of family and friends.
Team leader, Mary Kelly praised the walkers:
“I especially want to thank the ‘overnighters’ who kept our team represented on the track early on Saturday morning,” she said.
“I also want to thank all the other walkers who kept our baton moving until a storm hit on Saturday morning and relay was reluctantly called off.”
The Relay for Life Committee said the event was a financial success and the projected amount raised would be in excess of $190,000.
Mrs Kelly described this as a fantastic effort by everyone.
“Even though the relay was cut short, the Lioness Club was privileged to be able to take part in such a worthwhile event and is looking forward to taking part next year,” Mrs Kelly said.
