Season of respect begins

THE WorkSafe VCFL launched the country football season with a function at the Bunyip Football club on Saturday afternoon with the focus on those affected by the Black Saturday bushfires.
The VCFL chose Bunyip as a show of support for the people in the region that had suffered during the disaster and to signify that the 2009 season was a special community year with the VCFL to be actively involved with the rural community.
In an address that was the highlight of the launch chief executive Glenn Scott spoke passionately about the tragic bushfires that left an indelible mark on so many people.
Scott also advised that 35 grounds in Victoria had struggled with the 12-year drought, with another 21 damaged by the bushfires, and he paid tribute to the dedication of the communities that worked so hard to ensure a football season could proceed at all.
Scott announced that the VCFL has started a bushfire appeal fund and the weekend’s football on 30/31 May would be dedicated statewide to the cause.
He added that the VCFL was also well aware of the challenges facing clubs as a result of the economic downturn and cautioned clubs on their spending.
AFL football legend Ron Barassi has been re-appointed as the WorkSafe VCFL ambassador for 2009.
