New award to net success

CASEY Cardinia netball is laden with super-talented juniors on their way up to stardom in the sport and that is set to be recognised this season with the initiation of a new award sponsored by Star News Group – the 2009 Young Rising Netball Star.
Promising players from Casey Cardinia Netball League clubs’ junior ranks will be nominated on a fortnightly basis with a short profile and picture of the player chosen to appear in the Pakenham Gazette netball pages and also the weekly record.
At the end of the year a player from the nominated group will be selected as the season’s Netball Star and presented with an award at the league’s annual netball vote count night.
MPNFL netball chairperson Alison Neil said the award was a great idea and due recognition for the development of netball in the area over the past seven years.
“It’s a good step and brings the netball in line with the football league that has had the Young Gun award for several years now,” she said.
“The girls love it and it gives everyone involved and every club the opportunity to have their best rising stars recognised outside their own club.”
Ms Neil will co-ordinate the nominations and clubs will be contacted as the season progresses to supply names of potential rising stars for consideration.
