Rain, but it poured money

POURING rain didn’t stop a strong field completing the 2009 Casey Cardinia Relay For Life.
The event attracted 28 teams and 1467 participants who helped raise $166,373 for the Cancer Council of Victoria to date.
The ribbon was cut at 6pm on Friday 13 March and the first steps were taken in the annual Casey-Cardinia event at Akoonah Park, Berwick.
“At dusk, we lined the track with candles and messages dedicated to loved ones who have faced cancer. We know from previous Casey Relay For Life events that this is always one of the most moving reminders of why we fight cancer”, Relay For Life co-ordinator Sarah Dobson said.
While the rain fell on Saturday morning and shortened the event, it did not dampen participants’ spirits.
“Despite the event finishing early teams still walked throughout the night to show their support and courage to fight this disease,” Ms Dobson said.
The Relay For Life is a 24-hour walk, stroll or run during which teams of 10 or more take to the track to raise money for the Cancer Council of Victoria.
All funds raised go directly to supporting the Cancer Council of Victoria’s research, education and support services.
Teams that raise $5000 or more receive a “research award”, which allows them to choose what area of research the money goes to.
Those interested in taking part of the 2010 Casey Cardinia Relay For Life can call 1300 656 585 or visit www.relayforlife.org.au
