Berwick ladies take titles

THE ladies section of Berwick Bowling Club has been busy over the past couple of weeks finalising club competitions.
On Thursday, 26 March, two finals were played before an enthusiastic crowd.
The club pairs were keenly contested between Kath Macqueen-Pat Thompson and Claire Charman-Brenda Townley, with Claire and Brenda coming out the winners.
Also played that particular morning was the final of the President’s Handicap between Jean Reddy and Jenny Azzopardi, with Jenny as the winner.
Both these matches were true finals, with great bowls played by all taking part.
Thursday, 2 April was the Canadian pairs’ event. It was an extremely hot and humid day, but the 38 teams struggled on and tried gamely to finish the three games of 10 ends. Unfortunately as players started to wilt with the heat, bowls secretary, Wendy West, made the difficult decision of cancelling the final game and this was accepted thankfully.
Winners of the day were a team from Inverloch skipped by Joy Brown, runners-up were Brenda Townley and Jean Douglas, Julie Walker, Pakenham and Claire Charman-Joy McMullin from Dandenong Club.
First-game winners were Joan Heggart and Marge Woodfall and second-game winners were Jetta Jans and Doris Christoffersen.
As the third game had been called off, the cards were fanned to find a winner.
This was won by Barbara Gribbin and Judy Turner.
Once again our wonderful catering convener, Glenda Nash, along with her band of merry helpers spoilt us all with her fabulous and imaginative cooking. Well done and a big thank you to you all.
As the bowling season comes to an end, the members are looking forward to the combined President’s and Presentation Day on 18 April and the final day the following weekend with ‘Battle of the Sexes’.
