TWO local youth groups have been given cash boosts, thanks to Pakenham’s Rotary and Inner Wheel clubs.
A total of $10,600 was given out to Windermere Kids Becoming Champions and the new Shire of Cardinia Youth Mobile Bus programs.
An additional $2,000 was also donated by the Inner Wheel Club of Pakenham to Windermere, proceeds from a very successful fashion parade run last November.
The clubs have thanked all generous local traders who donated goods and services and the people who purchased tickets for the Monster Xmas Trailer Raffle.
The last monster raffle raised a record amount, ensuring both clubs could make a significant contribution to local youth.
Club members were recently treated to a most informative presentation by Terry Thomas, Windermere’s community engagement and fundraising manager.
Ms Thomas shared some of the 150 year history of Windermere, and talked about some of the situations that some of the Kids Becoming Champions participants found themselves in.
The stories left club members with lumps in their throats and tears in their eyes, but a huge sense of achievement knowing their fundraising efforts are making a significant contribution.
Emma Firth, the youth services co-ordinator for the Cardinia Shire and councillor Brett Owen discussed the youth bus project.
Ms Firth explained how the concept evolved, identifying a need to reach out to local youth and what their requirements were, applying and receiving government grants, acquiring a suitable bus and, most importantly, outfitting it to meet the youth needs of today and tomorrow.
