Green Army’s first recruit

By Bridget Cook
Mrs Gilbert joined the Green Army – an initiative of the Gazette and Cardinia Shire Council – as she says it addresses an area she has been concerned about for quite some time.
“We as a family have tried to reduce our impact on the environment and now want others to be aware,” she said.
“People are just uneducated and the Green Army is a great initiative to get people thinking.
“It really encourages a community effort.”
Mrs Gilbert has successfully completed a home sustainability course at Holmesglen TAFE, giving her the ability to undertake assessments of residential properties and make recommendations to improve domestic sustainability.
She is keen to offer some simple tips that everyone can do in their own home to make a difference.
• Every night turn stand-by off on electronic devices including TV, DVD players, stereos and computers and only turn on what is needed on the power board.
• Set heater to 18 degrees or below and put on a jumper instead.
• Buy in bulk and avoid products including individually wrapped cheeses, chips, straws and small yogurts as they are not recyclable.
• Use Enjo, bicarb soda and vinegar to clean. This can also be used as a disinfectant for when people are ill.
• Invest in a battery recharger and rechargeable batteries.
• Visit www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au before going anywhere. All you need to do is type in a specific address and it will bring up a detailed list of public transport options.
• Invest in a travelling coffee mug and leave in the car or handbag. Places including coffee shops and McDonald’s will refill.
• Email companies about excessive or non-recyclable containers and take this information into consideration when shopping.
People joining Mrs Gilbert and her family in the Green Army can help the environment and win prizes along the way.
All Green Army members receive a welcome pack, with a shower timer, pen, notepad and information on how to help the environment.
They also go into the draw for monthly prizes, including a 1000 litre water tank valued at over $700.
The first 100 members to join also receive a free Squeaky Green Total Waterless Car Wash kit, valued at $5.95.
The kit washes, waxes and polishes the car exterior, windows and windscreen without water. There will also be monthly and milestone prizes of an environmental hamper.
