Crane company fined over death

A CRANE company has been fined $70,000 over the 2006 death of a construction worker at a site in Hogan Court, Pakenham.
Reservoir man Christos Binos, 58, was killed when a concrete tilt-panel fell on him.
Huntingdale Mobile Cranes (Aust) Pty Ltd pleaded guilty in the County Court to failing to provide a safe workplace for employees and people other than employees.
The company was one of three charged over safety failings at the construction site. The charges against two other companies are yet to be heard.
Judge Philip Coish was told the company had not checked to ensure pins were fitted under a concrete panel its crane had lifted, and had not ensured that steel support bracing on the panels were correctly positioned.
It was not alleged that Huntingdale Mobile Cranes’ breaches caused the fatality.
During Friday’s sentencing, Judge Coish said the safety failings were serious and, despite company concerns about the effect of a conviction on its obtaining future contracts, a conviction was warranted to ensure others ensured safety requirements were met.
