Action on deadly bend

By Melissa Grant
FEARS of an imminent fatality on a notorious bend on Kooweerup-Longwarry Road have subsided, after VicRoads personnel were out resurfacing the road last Friday.
Residents have welcomed the roadworks, after an escalating number of collisions on the bend just outside the Kooweerup township had them calling for authorities to take immediate action.
As reported in the Gazette (27 May), residents were alarmed to witness four separate collisions on the section of road within just two hours on Saturday 15 May. The Gazette visited the site the following Monday only to discover a South East Water truck resting in a ditch.
Kath Hazendonk, who lives near the bend, was pleased that VicRoads had taken prompt action.
“I’m happy that the work is being done, as are all the neighbours,” she said.
“For a while there I thought they weren’t going to do anything about it… as opposed to handballing it they have actually done something.”
Ms Hazendonk said the road was looking good and was hopeful that VicRoads would undertake more works in the future to further improve safety on the bend.
“I had a conversation with a chap from VicRoads. They’re looking into double lines, (because of ) the amount of traffic,” she said.
It is understood that the resurfacing works will help improve braking ability and reduce skidding on the bend.
