A lovable rogue

EVEN Jack Rae had to be pleasantly surprised at the number of people present to bid his wife Paula a final farewell on Wednesday 10 June.
Paula seemed to get into everyone’s heart and sometimes I used to think of her as a lovable rogue.
I hope I don’t get sued for saying that but Paula was Paula, full of smiles, jokes, and most of all held considerable consideration for other people.
If there was a fund-raiser on you would see her there, or likely as not, involved with the committee running the event. She lived by the tradition of the Rae family that meant if it was possible to help she would be there.
Berwick Show president Warwick Glendenning told guests at the show annual dinner on Thursday 11 June that she was part of the show and of Akoonah Park for the past 24 years.
He said she was always available to help in all manner of things from being a steward to making sandwiches and taking a cuppa to judges and stewards.
“She would welcome into her home people who travelled to officiate at the show.”
He said Paula was an experienced horse exhibitor and because of this had an insight into the needs of a judge and that a day spent working with her in the judging ring was always an enjoyable and enlightening experience.
“For many years Paula would bring her Belted Galloway cow with calf at foot to the show and this would delight visitors to the animal nursery. The old adage that behind every good man was a good woman was never truer in her support for husband Jack in all he has been and is involved in.
“We know how much the horse section of the show will miss her contribution and this was just a small part of her contribution to the community. Her loss will also be felt in the wider community, especially because of the support she gave in fund-raising and working for so many charities. We extend sympathy to Jack, Jessica, Scott, Judith, Noelene, Dianne and their families,” he said.
