Regular strong demand

IT HAS been two weeks since the last young cattle sale at VLE Pakenham and, given that the yarding was not that big, a lot of good to very good quality cattle was penned, including vealers, grain-assisted and grass-fattened yearlings and older cattle.
Demand was strong from all of the regular buyers, and since prices have been rising over the past two weeks it was not surprising to see price rises of two cents to 16 cents a kilogram.
About 450 vealers were penned, including a number of calves of only reasonable quality.
But demand from feedlots and people grain-feeding cattle set the pace.
The best quality B muscle vealers made between 215 cents and 237 cents, but most of the higher trends for vealers were seen in those that made from 190 cents to 220 cents a kilogram.
Plainer condition vealers, and those of plainer shape made from 150 cents to 180 cents with few making less than 160 cents a kilogram.
There were a few consignments of well-finished grain-assisted yearlings and they varied greatly in weight.
Prices for most B muscle steers and heifers were from 200 cents to 235 cents with some heavy yearlings 185 cents to 210 cents a kilogram.
Again lot feeders set the pace on a lot of cattle with steers making between 170 cents and 190 cents with the heifers bought for 15 cents to 185 cents a kilogram.
A reasonably good selection of 145 quality heavy yearling and grown steers sold to strong demand, making between 166 cents and 185 cents. This was an improvement of 11 cents to 12 cents on the previous sale of two weeks ago.
About 70 grown heifers were penned, and sold well, also making from 142 cents to 165 cents a kilogram.
The VLE draw for the week from Monday 22 June is as follows: 1, Mick Hornsby; 2, Everitt and Seeley; 3, Rodwells; 4, Elders; 5, SEJ; 6, Landmark; 7, Alex Scott; 8, Nathan Gibbon.
