RESIDENTS have formed a lobby group to oppose a plan to build a massive six level hotel and shopping complex on land at the corner of Lyall Road and Anne Street, Berwick.
The land was always earmarked for a lesser development, thought to be in the form of a hotel and conference centre, but many people were shocked when plans were presented to Casey Council for the complex that shows five above-ground levels.
The Berwick village strategy limits buildings to three levels and they must be in keeping with the village heritage.
Spokesperson for the lobby group Annette Aldersea said on Monday that the planned complex was over the top and unacceptable.
She said the group’s first task was to ensure that all Berwick residents were advised of what they were facing.
“We are not against development but this is outside the village planning scheme and we intend to have it stopped,” she said.
My view is that with new government controls on development within the 2030 plan boundary this group will need massive support to ensure that the project is contained to within Berwick’s strategy.
