SELLING to similar competition, the equal-size yarding of mostly young cattle sold to stronger demand at times at VLE Pakenham.
This was seen especially for some cattle to feed-on with some plainer condition and plainer shape cattle purchased. Overall demand was very strong and prices were generally firm to five cents per kilogram higher.
While the quality was not as good there were still 310 vealers penned, and the demand was strong for all calves. Most of the better-quality vealers made between 180 cents and 225 cents, and averaged two cents per kilogram higher.
However, some well-bred light-weight calves were penned, weighing between 220 kilograms and 300 kilograms liveweight, and these sold very well with demand a lot stronger for feeder steers and heifers. Prices were from 165 cents to 192 cents, and averaged 13 cents per kilogram dearer.
Supplementary-fed yearlings stole the show, both for quality and price. Very strong demand saw the best quality B muscle yearlings make from 190 cents to 235 cents, and the top price was four cents per kilogram higher.
Grass-fattened yearlings also sold well, especially the heavier steers. Prices for light to medium weights were between 160 cents and 195 cents, and most of the heavier steers made from 175 cents to 196 cents per kilogram.
Lot feeders put a floor in the market purchasing a large number of steers and heifers. However, this was due in part to the quality of the yarding with good number of plainer condition cattle penned that were well bred.
Prices for C muscle cattle were between 165 cents and 195 cents with isolated sales of B muscles to 205 cents per kilogram. Some of the good sales occurred for a number of pen lots of D2 and D3 heifers, which made between 160 cents and 180 cents per kilogram.
