Prices ease on lighter yarding

THERE were 230 head less yarded this Wednesday at the fat cattle market at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul and lighter condition amongst the categories saw prices ease back slightly.
Restockers had several pen lots of store type steers to choose from and managed to purchase around 20 per cent of the offerings.
Only 56 steers were on offer and sold to a top of 200 cents, although the average eased three cents to 168.9.
The price for bullocks topped at 185.2 and the lighter size had the average back two cents to 174.4, while heifers managed to hold value with a minor reduction in average to 156.8 and reached a top of 191.2.
The vealer yarding contained more than the average amount of very light younger head, with restockers busy in this part of the field, the top end of the line saw prices reach 237.2 and the average for the 339 penned was 180.1.
Thursday saw the bull and cow sale continue its trend of firm to higher prices, 30 bulls sold to excellent demand with good heavy quality head on offer. The average this week rose 10 cents to 156.6 and the top was 174.6 with several bulls in the 170 range.
The 616 cows penned saw the average rise to 129.9, heavy set cows sold to stronger demand with lighter head remaining firm, the average weight this week rose 10 kilograms and the top price was 164.6.
