VLE sees small yard and high demand

A NUMBER of factors came together to shape the outcome of the young cattle at VLE Pakenham, one of which was a smaller yarding.
The others were plainer quality, more competition and stronger demand.
Cattle purchased to feed on grain, and at times return to the paddock made up around 45 per cent of the yarding and this strong interaction between feedlots, restockers and trade buyers lifted prices two cents to 11 cents per kilogram.
Approximately 270 vealers were penned which varied in quality and condition.
Prices for the few best quality vealers were between 185 cents and 231.2, but there were plenty of secondary types that made from 165 to 195 cents per kilogram.
Quite a number of these were purchased to be fed on, along with a lot of yearling steers and heifers that made from 165 cents to 201 cents per kilogram.
All of the lower prices of 135 cents to 158 cents per kilogram were for poorly bred cattle or for other notable reasons.
Both competition and demand was strong for a reasonable selection of yearling steers and heifers in reasonable to good condition.
Most sales of C muscle yearlings were from 175 cents to 215 cents per kilogram with the best quality supplementary fed yearlings making up to 230 cents per kilogram.
There was a small selection of grown steers and heifers sold with prices being firm to two cents per kilogram dearer.
Steers made between 170 cents and 188 cents for most sales and heifers from 138 cents to 160 cents per kilogram.
The VLE draw for the week commencing Monday 20 July is as follows: 1, Rodwells; 2, Elders; 3, Mick Hornsby; 4, Landmark; 5, Alex Scott; 6, Nathan Gibbon; 7, SEJ; 8, Everitt and Seeley. The next store sale is on 23 July commencing at 10am.
