All aboard for station

PLANS for Cardinia Road Station are progressing, with the State Government recently awarding a contract for its design.
Transport Minister Lynne Kosky last week visited the site of the new railway station to announce that Arup, in partnership with Cox Architects and Planners, would design it. Construction of the station would begin next year, she said.
However, it isn’t expected to open to the public until 2012-’13.
Ms Kosky said construction of Cardinia Road Station and three other new stations at Lynbrook, Caroline Springs and Williams Landing, showed the State Government was taking action to increase access to rail services.
“With construction of these new stations to begin in 2010, the design of the four new stations have been packaged together to deliver maximum efficiencies in both the design and construction phase, while also minimising impacts on the train network,” she said. Gembrook MP Tammy Lobato was pleased the design contract had been awarded.
“The Casey-Cardinia growth area, which includes Pakenham and Lynbrook, has experienced the greatest residential development of all of Melbourne’s growth areas over the past 10 years,” she said.
“New stations at Cardinia Road in Pakenham, and Lynbrook are practical steps towards servicing these rapidly expanding communities.”
Cardinia Shire mayor Bill Pearson also welcomed the news.
“Being a new station it will have larger car parks and it won’t only service the people of Lakeside, Arena and VicUrban’s proposed new development – it will also take some of the overflow from Pakenham station,” he said.
All four new stations will feature car parking, drop-off zones, taxi and bus facilities, pedestrian and bicycle access and closed circuit camera security.
